Since its inception in 1988, Eo e Emalani I Alaka`i (also called the Emalani Festival) has quietly become one of the most authentic and powerful Hawaiian cultural experiences in the State. The outdoor event, held in early October, The Emalani Festival commemorates the 1871 journey of Hawaii`s beloved Queen Emma to these upland forests.
Once, long ago, but not so long ago that many now living haven’t forgotten, there was a beautiful Princess of the Hawaiian Islands: Princess Victoria Ka’iulani Kalaninuiahilapalapa Kawekiu I Lunalilo Cleghorn. She became know as Ka’iulani which means ‘The Royal Sacred One’…The day was October 16th 1875, 135 years ago, when the lovely young girl was born to a Hawaiian Mother and a Father who was Scottish by birth.
For the last 100 years Ka’iulani’s Story may have been known as tragic because she died young and beautiful…Our festival is dedicated in her memory and to those who struggle throughout the World seeking peace with justice.
The newly named Princess Ka’iulani Story Fest, is in its 9th great year on Kauai, and is a family experience that goes beyond entertainment and into the realm of cultural understanding and the joyful telling of tales.
Participants from around the island and beyond bring their special brand of Hawaiian culture to this event with live storytelling, celebrity readers, arts and craft activities, music and dance performances, a street parade and our historical commemorative portrayal of the beloved Princess Victoria Ka’iulani on her birthday.

Kauai Historical Society's annual pa'ina fundraiser will celebrate the 100th birthday of Grace Buscher Guslander, who established the famed Coco Palms Resort as a unique tropical vacation experience. We will recapture some of the royal welcome that Mrs. Guslander created for her guests in ceremonies including the nightly torchlighting, Hawaiian music reviews, elegant dinners, cocktail parties, coconut tree planting ceremonies, and holiday celebrations. The 100th birthday celebration will be on Saturday, October 23, at Smith's Tropical Paradise in Wailua, a magnificent setting of lagoons, mountain views, coco palms, flowers and peacocks. Uncle Larry Rivera will narrate the torchlighting and provide music as he did for decades. Tropical cocktails and island-style appetizers will be served. Varied Kauai musicians will provide more music, followed by a ballroom dancing demonstration to get everyone in the mood to dance into the evening. A clamshell sink from the Coco Palms will be up for auction to benefit the Kauai Historical Society, as will be many other unusual artifacts and donated items. A slide show and vignettes by former staff and friends of Grace will also be presented. Call the Kauai Historical Society or email for information and reservations. A portion of the ticket price is a donation to the Kauai Historical Society.
