About the Festival:
A week of festivities honoring the birthday and birthplace of Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole, one of Hawai‘i’s most beloved monarchs, is set for March 23rd through the 30th in the Po‘ipu area of Kaua‘i. Most events are free of charge to the public, with many activities taking place at the Grand Hyatt
Kaua‘i Resort and Spa. Residents and visitors will be able to participate in Native Hawaiian cultural teaching, demonstrations, and “talk-story” sessions; enjoy a coastal hike; learn about ancient Hawaiian salt ponds; and listen to renowned Hawaiian entertainment Sunday through Friday. A detailed event list is located at http://poipubeach.org/visitor_info/festivals.
On Saturday, March 29, there will be a full day of festivities and events, starting with an early morning Hawaiian protocol ceremony at the Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort and Spa. Commemorative ceremonies, organized by the Royal Order of Kamehameha will also be held at Kuhio's birthplace, Prince Kuhio Park. The ceremonies feature dance, chant and the offering of ho‘okupu (gifts) by various Native Hawaiian representatives. After the ceremonies, visitors and residents may attend numerous activities at the Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort and Spa that run between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. A Hawaiian village atmosphere is recreated and cultural demonstrations provide opportunities to interpret the Hawaiian culture. Demonstrations, lectures, displays, and a poetry reading are given by some of Hawai‘i’s most highly regarded artists such as quilters, weavers, wood carvers, pohaku (stone) carvers, feather artists, tapa makers and writers.
On Sunday, March 30, from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m. the Prince Kuhio Celebration Lu‘au (discounted fee) will be hosted by the Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort and Spa featuring introduction of members from Hawaiian civic clubs along with entertainment by Hawai‘i’s well known falsetto singer, Nicky Castillo.
Prince Kuhio, in line for succession to the throne before the Hawaiian Monarchy was overthrown, was known for his work to perpetuate the Native Hawaiian culture and preserve Native Hawaiian practices. Serving in the U.S. Congress for 10 years, Kuhio led the effort to establish the Hawaiian Homes
Commission Act. He was called Ke Ali‘i Makaaiana (Prince of the People).
The Prince Kuhio Celebration is supported, in part, by the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority, the County of Kaua‘i, the Po`ipu Beach Foundation and Grand Hyatt Kaua`I Resort and Spa.
